Feeling Things Out

“Gao Yan.”

She suddenly called out his name. She placed her phone on top of the bed and put it on speaker. She shifted her body under the blanket.

“Is the weather okay over there?” she asked after hearing his deep voice respond.

“It’s okay, how about your side?”

“It’s also okay, but I may not be able to go back this weekend.”

“Yeah, I heard from Yilin.”

“What about you? What are you going to do this weekend?”

“I’ll be having lunch with some partners and attending a forum…”

That’s how they talked.

It’s all trivial things, but Gao Yan’s sexy voice made Yu Huan feel like she was surrounded by graceful music.

Her naked body twitched gently under the blanket. Her hand was loosely between her legs, rubbing slowly and steadily.

On the other end of the phone, Gao Yan clearly heard each word. But they were gradual, as if the brain was pieceing the words together into a complete sentence while it was being leaked out somewhere else.

Yu Huan sank back into the soft bed. Her voice responded more and more slowly, and the time it took for her to think became longer.

Is she sleepy?

Gao Yan could tell her replies were slowing down and was about to ask. However, he suddenly heard an unrepressed, short and gentle moan from her.

“What are you doing?” Almost instantly, his Adam’s apple slid along.

Yu Huan partially arched up and gradually relaxed. After a while, she replied, “I’m… talking to you—ah.”

Her irregular voice was accompanied by an unsteady gasp.

“You…” Gao Yan was too familiar with that sound.

For a moment, he felt his breathing become unstable.

Yu Huan heard a change in his breathing coming from the phone and knew that she had been found out. She reached out and was about to cut off the call.

As soon as she reached it, she heard him ask, “You miss me? Really?”

This was flirting.

Because he slightly dragged out the last syllables, like his ambiguous murmuring during those certain special moments.

But it was not all flirting. He didn’t add “want it?”, and the last question was a sincere one, right?

Really?

The tricky thing about this question was that he knew what she was thinking and wanted her to admit it.

It was like what he had done in the past—as a gentleman with his thoughtfulness, he broke down her defenses bit by bit, and encouraged her to be determined about her desires and feelings.

But when she did that, he still refused to reveal his intentions.

He asked if she missed him, but what about him? Did he miss her or care?

“If I said I missed you, would you come over?” Yu Huan withdrew her hand and suddenly spoke in a flirtatious tone.

The distance between them was nearly a thousand kilometers. Even if a plane was used to make the trip, it would take half a day.

“Will you come over and spend the weekend with me?” she questioned in a coquettish tone.

The person on the other end of the phone was silent for a moment and said, “Do you want me to come over?”

Sure enough, it was a vague answer—a trick men often use to throw the question back at the woman, which would make her realize how irrational she was being, and then give up.

If it had been in the past, Yu Huan would have laughed it off, and it would have been over.

But this time, Yu Huan nodded and said, “Yes.”

In the past, when he went on business trips, she had the urge to visit him during her vacation time.

She would fly from her city to his and see him to ease her thoughts.

She knew that if she spoke, he would probably bear all the expenses and thoughtfully treat her to a nice vacation or trip.

But they were not lovers. If it’s romantic to travel to meet your other half, then it was a bit cheap to do so as friends with benefits.

“I want you to come over,” Yu Huan said.

Her desire was real.

Her attempt at feeling things out was also real.

Men like Gao Yan might only be considerate of her because of how they were brought up:  Paying for everything because he didn’t lack any money. Even if he was talking ambiguously to her now, it might just be out of boredom. And what if she had asked him to make a trip during the weekend when he didn’t have much time?

In the past, she ran into him when he was going through a breakup. She heard the accusation his ex made. She complained that although he had done his role as the boyfriend, he always lacked in taking initiative and being attentive—she couldn’t empathize with the ex, and even felt that she was somewhat willful.

But now, she suddenly understood that feeling.

It was the kind of feeling where you’ve already deep into the relationship and the other person seemed like he was able to leave you at any time.

“Come over, okay?” The sadness brought by an unrequited love gave Yu Huan a rare push.

She was not Gao Yan’s girlfriend, and she couldn’t threaten to break up with him.

He must think she’s crazy, right?

That’s right. She could use this as a reason to stifle all those thoughts. Next time, she was just going to surrender her body to enjoy it, until she found another intimate relationship that could meet both her physical and emotional needs.

Yu Huan’s thoughts were like this.

Her heart slowly sank as his silence grew.

“Go to bed, good night,” she said finally.

She still overestimated herself.

Yu Huan tossed and turned all night. She didn’t sleep well.

The next day, she still displayed her perfect professionalism at the meeting.

When it was finally over and the reports were sorted out, Yu Huan closed her laptop. She had a headache and rubbed her temples. She said to Chen Yilin, “You can go eat by yourself. I want to go back and rest for a while.”

“Okay.” Chen Yilin nodded and saw that she was tired. “Let me bring you back some food.”

“No, it’ll just be for a bit. I’ll just grab something to eat at the hotel.”

Yu Huan returned to her hotel room. She basically took a shower and went to bed.

While she was in a daze, her phone’s notification sound went off several times. She ignored it until her phone’s ringing persisted. She then felt for her phone from under her pillow.

The caller was Gao Yan.

The missed messages were also from him, which were

“I’m here.”

“Share your location.”

“Where are you?”

And one last sentence: “Open the door.”

Yu Huan immediately jumped out of bed.

She looked at the person in front of her, her face full of disbelief.

Why is he here?

How did he… know where I was staying?

She wanted to ask, but before she could ask the questions, she felt that these questions were redundant.

She asked him to come herself.

As for how he found out it was here, with Chen Yilin around, what could he not find out?
