第 42 章
Invitation
At night, Yu Huan had to complain, “That was too public.”
“What should I have done? Gao Yan asked in reply. “Do I have to keep sneaking around and then suddenly send an invitation to everyone when we get married?”
“…”
The word “marriage” came out of his mouth naturally, and for a moment, Yu Huan seemed to be unable to breathe.
Gao Yan took the opportunity to go over and kiss her.
He pressed her under his body and kissed her tenderly. He caressed her soft skin with his fingertips, climbing from her waist to her back, feeling every inch of her for a moment.
The temperature inside gradually rose, and Yu Huan was soon stripped clean by Gao Yan. At this moment, a familiar weight and sensation suddenly came from her lower abdomen, accompanied by a trickle of liquid coming out.
“Wait a moment.” Yu Huan pushed Gao Yan away and got up and went to the bathroom.
A few minutes later, she came out from the bathroom with a listless face and said, “My ‘thing’… is here.”
Her period came earlier.
Yu Huan’s body was better than before, she no longer felt like dying from period cramps. However, the discomfort in her lower abdomen still made her too lazy to move.
Gao Yan’s body temperature was higher than hers, making it suitable for him to act as a human pillow.
She leaned comfortably into his embrace, and he put his hand over her stomach to keep her warm.
They sat like this on the sofa while watching a movie.
This made Gao Yan think of a time where they were together like this before, where they did nothing and simply watched movies.
It was Yan Yuhua’s death anniversary in early autumn last year.
Gao Yan went to sweep the grave early in the morning. When he arrived at the cemetery, he found someone had arrived earlier than him.
The weeds around the gravestone had been cleared. In front were flowers. It was not chrysanthemums, but Yan Yuhua’s favorite flower: ginger lily.
At that period of time, Gao Lan and her husband had settled abroad, and Chen Yilin was out of the country. The only person left to make an offering at Yan Yuhua’s grave in the morning was Gao Cheng.
If it wasn’t him, Gao Yan couldn’t think of anyone who would send Yan Yuhua ginger lilies to pay their respect. It was clearly flowers that symbolized Gao Cheng and Yan Yuhua’s vows.
Gao Yan didn’t know whether to think it was considerate or not. She’s dead, so who are you doing this for?
Gao Yan looked at the unpleasant white flowers as he had these thoughts.
But it reminded him of the sadness Gao Cheng had expressed during Yan Yuhua’s last days.
It was a declining depression that anyone with eyes could see. He was a person on the verge of explosiveness. Any tiny thing could become a trigger.
But when he was in front of Yan Yuhua, he would change into a relaxed and patient person. He pushed her to bask in the sun, told her jokes, and helped her wipe her body…
Once, Gao Lan spoke up for him, “Do you… do you think there’s a possibility that he was fooling around outside to attract our mother’s attention… like how he complains about how our mother never gave him warmth every time he gets drunk.”
Gao Yan scoffed at this.
In Gao Cheng and Yan Yuhua’s marriage, Yan Yuhua had her faults even if she was strong and indifferent. Gao Cheng was clearly the one who was more wrong.
If Yan Yuhua’s behavior only caused cracks in their marriage, then Gao Cheng’s behavior was the broken pot that fell. He made it impossible for their marriage to be repaired again.
Gao Yan didn’t agree with Gao Cheng’s cheating. He didn’t want to define Gao Cheng’s after-the-fact regret as affection. It made him feel like the word “affection” was an insult.
But when he looked at the flowers in front of him, he thought of Gao Cheng pulling the weeds around the grave. Gao Cheng probably looked lonely as he moved his clumsy legs and talked to himself.
Gao Yan still choked up for some reason.
Gao Yan had convinced himself that the blame and alienation he and Gao Lan had towards Gao Cheng were purely Gao Cheng’s own fault.
But Yan Yuhua didn’t care about what Gao Cheng had done. She never seemed to have condoned the preposterous things he did outside.
Gao Yan was not sure whether what he and Gao Lan had done to Gao Cheng was a substitute for Yan Yuhua punishing Gao Cheng.
Gao Yan placed the flowers down and took out a handkerchief to wipe Yan Yuhua’s grave.
In the next moment, he received a message from Yu Huan that her period had come all of a sudden, so she couldn’t meet him in the afternoon.
Can’t meet?
Somehow, at the moment he saw the message, he wanted to see her.
He simply wanted to talk to her for a while, or even if they say nothing, just sit quietly together.
So he took a short breath and replied, “I’m already on the way.”
That afternoon, Gao Yan went to Yu Huan’s house.
They drew the curtains and sat together on the sofa like how they were currently watching a movie.
Gao Yan had forgotten the name and plot of the movie.
He only remembered holding Yu Huan comfortably. All those messy thoughts and troubles were temporarily forgotten.
His mind was not on the movie, and he occasionally asked her about the plot after being distracted.
She patiently explained it to him.
The colors on the screen reflected in her eyes, giving off a sparkle. Her slender eyelashes dropped slightly, and her eyes were like scattered starlight.
He didn’t mean to, but he lowered his head and kissed her.
With a slight turn, their thighs were together.
The warm breath she exhaled touched his skin, and her plump and soft chest moved with her breath. She trembled in his arms for a moment
Despite kissing her in the moment, he had no desire. They separated, and that part of him reacted.
“Do you want me to help you?” she whispered as she felt the thing between his legs across her pants…
When she asked, her face was still a bit pale. She was not covering her stomach, but her slightly furrowed brow showed that she was not feeling well.
Gao Yan suddenly felt like an asshole.
At the same time, he hated the relationship between him and Yu Huan—a relationship where only desires connect them.
There were other things that they did that were attractive to him: when they were chatting with each other like friends, sitting on the sofa with her, watching movies, and having dinner together…
He didn’t travel through most of the city to sleep with her. Even when she was uncomfortable, she was still worried about his desires. It’s like she felt like they had to do something whenever he appeared in her home.
Gao Yan looked at Yu Huan in a daze.
He really wanted to tell her what he was thinking. When he organized his thoughts to say it, he realized that he couldn’t say it well.
He was afraid.
Afraid that those chaotic emotions would not clear up.
Afraid of giving her the wrong expectation.
Afraid that she didn’t have that expectation for him.
Afraid that his recklessness would end the relationship between them.
Fortunately, Yu Huan was braver than him.
What was on the TV screen had never been important to Gao Yan.
His thoughts were like vines that involuntarily warped around the woman in his arms.
She’s so cute.
In the dim light reflected from the screen, he couldn’t stop himself from lowering head to kiss her.
Their lips met.
He reached to hold her waist as she put her tongue in and explored his mouth. He played with her tongue, sucked it and went back and forth…
He kissed softly and gently.
There was no sexual desire, just a simple desire to kiss her
After he had kissed her enough, his fingertips were still stroking her neck, and his forehead was touching hers. “Move in and live with me,” he said.
“Huh?” Yu Huan was giddy from the kisses, and before she could react, she heard Gao Yan rub against the tip of her nose and say, “I think I want to hold you like this every day when I come back from work.”
