Rejection

On Sunday morning, when Chu Xia woke up, Liang Shiyun was lying in his arms and fast asleep.

Her back was against his chest. They were together under the blanket in an extremely intimate way.

Sunlight penetrated through the window and softly landed on Liang Shiyun’s white and bare shoulders.

Feeling the softness and delicateness of her arms, Chu Xia gently kissed her neck, and carefully got up.

Last night was a night of passion. Their clothes were randomly thrown in the room.

Chu Xia picked it up and put it on. He carefully looked at the apartment in front of him again.

The way the apartment looked under natural light was different from that at night. He looked at the huge refrigerator in the kitchen and had to pull it open

It was as he expected, there wasn’t much inside.

She didn’t seem to be eating or cooking at home. There were only fruits and milk in the refrigerator, and the rest were wine and facial masks.

Chu Xia frowned, and opened the cabinet next to him.

The things in the cabinet were fuller than the refrigerator. There was at least rice, noodles, oil, and sauces, even if most of them were new and unopened.

Chu Xia looked at the half bag of rice and decided to cook congee.

He was still not very good at cooking. He was abroad for a few years and was forced to learn one or two survival skills.

After finally finding a pot from the cupboard, he measured a cup of rice, rinsed it a few times, and began to cook.

When Liang Shiyun got up, washed up, and came out, she saw him busy in the kitchen.

The morning light was warm, and the man stood by the counter.

The pot was bubbling gently. He stood and stirred with the spoon from time to time, his eyes focused.

“Are you cooking congee?” Liang Shiyun walked over.

“Yeah, it’s almost ready.” Chu Xia moved slightly, letting her look.

The rice grains were rolling in the steam-filled pot, and the congee liquid couldn’t stop bubbling.  The aroma was overwhelming.

“Wait a little longer, I’ll cook two eggs.” He saw the hunger in her eyes. He put down the porcelain spoon in his hand, turned around and kissed her forehead lightly.

Warmth slowly surged between them as the sun rose.

Liang Shiyun was surprised for a moment, and then she heard Chu Xia say, “You don’t have any vegetables in the refrigerator, so let’s have a simple breakfast and go out to eat later.”

“By the way, you don’t need to work today, right?” he asked.

Some things could be considered impulsive when it happen once, but it could not be explained like this when it happened twice

Chu Xia put the pan on the gas stove. His tone was natural, as if he was having a normal conversation with her as a couple.

Liang Shiyun raised her eyes to look at him, and she was frowning slightly.

“I have a meeting in the afternoon to discuss some business,” she said.

“Oh.” Chu Xia cracked the eggs into the pan. “What about at night?”

Liang Shiyun didn’t say.

The eggs taken out of the refrigerator slipped into the hot oil and sizzled immediately.

Liang Shiyun looked down at the transparent egg whites solidifying little by little, then the scorched edges rolled up… When Chu Xia turned off the fire and the kitchen became quiet again, she looked up at him. “Chu Xia…”

“Hm?”

“Have you had any other girlfriends in the past few years?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“… I was too busy before.”

Chu Xia put the fried eggs on the plate and looked up at Liang Shiyun.

Women always liked to dwell on questions about the past. He waited for her to ask more, but Liang Shiyun lowered her eyes and said, “Me too.”

“I’ve been so busy with the company over the past few years…” she said.

This was the first time since the reunion that she talked about how hard her work was. Chu Xia listened carefully. During the days he wasn’t there for her, he could no longer make up for it. At most he could only comfort her, and just allow her to speak.

Liang Shiyun changed the subject calmly. “Over the years, my family has actually introduced me to many partners. There were many excellent ones, but nothing ended up happening with them.”

Chu Xia remembered Dr. Cen from last night, and he frowned. He did not quite understand what she meant.

Liang Shiyun continued, “One reason is work. Another reason is that I think love is too troublesome. If two people’s lives are not on the same wavelength, then it’s really meaningless to insist on accommodating each other.”

After she finished speaking, she looked up at him.

In an instant, Chu Xia realized that she was trying to tell him. She was gently reminding him that she didn’t want to have a relationship right now. The relationship between them would not change because of last night.

He looked into Liang Shiyun’s eyes, but he couldn’t even speak up for himself. It was because he had said similar things when they broke up.

Back then, he went abroad to study in graduate school, and she stayed in the country to take over her father’s company.

After leaving the country, their relationship faded.

One of them was at home and the other was abroad; one was working and the other was studying. Both of them were busy with a time difference. When she was free, he was sleeping; when he was free, she was busy with the company.

They never had any time together.

Although Liang Shiyun sent him messy messages whenever she had time, he tried his best to talk through it. Yet, the conversation between them gradually decreased.

During video calls, it usually ended up being a few words. She would either fall asleep, or she would notice his exhaustion and urged him to sleep.

It was only a matter of time before they broke up, and he was the one who proposed it.

He was busy with an exam, and after the exam, he remembered that he hadn’t sent her a message for a long time. Thus, he called her.

It was a man who answered the phone. The voice was very young, not like an elder, nor did it sound like any male friends that he knew well.

“Who are you?” It was night in the country at that time, and Chu Xia had to ask this question.

“I’m Shishi’s friend,” the man on the other end of the phone said. “Shishi is taking an X-ray in the radiology room, and she left the phone to me for safekeeping. What do you want from her?”

“X-ray? Is she sick?”

“Inflamed wisdom teeth.”

“Is it serious?”

“… it’s pretty serious.”

…………

That day, not long after Chu Xia hung up the phone, Liang Shiyun called back.

The inflammation was indeed serious, and her speech was a little slurred. When he mentioned the man who answered the phone, she gave a serious explanation.

It turned out that it was not a friend, but a blind date.

Liang Shiyun explained that she couldn’t stop her relatives and they wanted them to meet face to face. Her teeth were hurting badly during dinner, and she was dragged to the hospital.

“I’ve already made it clear to him that I have a boyfriend, and it’s you.” Liang Shiyun was afraid that he might misunderstand, so she emphasized that.

Chu Xia listened silently, and said, “Liang Shiyun, why don’t we break up?”

He remembered that his tone was very calm at the time.

He said that since she had decided to stay in the country to accept her father’s company, and everyone was so busy, it was meaningless to hold on to this relationship. It was better to break up, it was better for everyone.

“Since we’re both so tired of it, let’s break up,” Chu Xia said to Liang Shiyun.

He couldn’t see Liang Shiyun’s expression on the other end of the phone.

He only had one thought. If she disagreed, how could he control his heart?

Yet, there was just silence.

The silence made Chu Xia feel guilty. Then Liang Shiyun said, “Okay.”

“Take care of yourself,” she said.

They broke up like this.

Chu Xia admitted that he was a little emotional at the time. She was sick, but there was another man by her side

It was more of a rational decision.

He was not a woman, and he was infatuated with love. He never believed that people who loved each other must be together even if they had to overcome all difficulties.

If it was dragged on, it would not be good for any of them.

It was like when she was sick. Since he couldn’t be by her side, someone else should take care of her.

Based on these considerations, he rationally proposed to break up.

But he forgot that the reason why human beings were human beings rather than sophisticated machines was that human beings could not always be rational.
