Doubt

Liang Shiyun still remembered how Chu Xia’s sounded when he said they should break up.

It was like a stream. It calmly made a person forget how abrupt the opening was.

Why don’t we break up?

Falling in love was decided between two people, but breaking up could be terminated by only one person.

Her grievances and unhappiness could only be buried quietly in her heart.

The burden she had from work was on her shoulders, and she didn’t have much time to think about her feelings.

But at night, she often dreamed about those small fragments of memories: going to the library together, “sneaking out” under the eyes of their classmates, and those intimate moments…

Life during college had long been a thing of the past, and the company’s heavy affairs weighed her down. Every time Liang Shiyun woke up, she could only grieve silently by herself as she tossed and turned.

She needed an emotional outlet.

In the past, Chu Xia was her outlet even if he did not reply to her in time or give her suggestions.

As long as he listened or as long as she knew he was there, she felt safe.

But he said let’s break up.

Her spiritual pillar collapsed, and the emotional torture grew

No one knew how she got here.

Of course, she wouldn’t tell him how she got here.

“Since we broke up, you should be more straightforward. You can’t turn around and talk to me like that just because you can’t find a better girlfriend over the years.” Liang Shiyun stuffed the gift back into Chu Xia’s hand. “I won’t deny that it’s helpful to feel—”

If she insisted on saying that she didn’t feel anything, even Liang Shiyun herself wouldn’t believe it.

“No one is willing to have a physical relationship with someone who they don’t have feelings for, but it’s only limited to physical relationships.”

What she meant was anything Chu Xia said would be meaningless.

He looked at Liang Shiyun silently. He was trying to find a flaw in her calm expression, but it was hopeless.

Liang Shiyun watched him turn and leave, then she turned around and opened the door.

“Ex boyfriend?” Lin Yan came out when he heard her. “I didn’t intend to eavesdrop, but your voice was a bit louder…”

“Yeah,” Liang Shiyun responded. She was not interested in continuing this conversation, and went to the kitchen for some water.

“Sister is in a bad mood? Do you want to drink?” Lin Yan stood outside and poked his head to look at her.

“I have to get up early tomorrow,” Liang Shiyun said.

“Oh.” Lin Yan nodded with understanding. “Then go to bed early, I will take Bobby back first.”

In the next few days, Chu Xia never bothered Liang Shiyun again.

He did not suddenly send a message when she was in a meeting; he did not suddenly appear while she was having breakfast; and he did not appear at her door without any notice.

Occasionally, she ran into him in the community. He would simply say hello, and then leave in a hurry.

He seemed to be busy.

At the end of the month, Liang Shiyun and Gao Yan met at a land auction. It was only after Gao Yan mentioned it did she find out that Chu Xia rented an office to start a design studio.

“I thought you two were messing around with joint spaces…”

“He is not interested in it, he just agreed to be the main designer.”

“He still wants to go into design? Then why did he come back?”

Chu Xia has developed quite well abroad in recent years.

Although Liang Shiyun never read his resume, she knew a lot of what was on it indirectly from the conversations had with Fang Yuan and Gao Yan.

He had outstanding grades during graduate school, RIBA Student Award, UIA-PHG Team Award and other impressive awards. As soon as he graduated, he entered a good company. He was talented and willing to work hard. And at a young age, he had a design contract

Even Fang Yuan expressed how she didn’t understand several times—why did he give up his bright future?

Liang Shiyun thought he was tired. Architects were a group of people who never worked during regular working hours. The difficulty of their work was worse than 996 jobs1 mentioned online.

But now

If Chu Xia still persisted in architecture, then why did he return to the country?

The domestic architect design market was shrinking year by year. The competition was fierce, and the working environment was far worse than abroad… Liang Shiyun really couldn’t figure it out.

“Who knows?” Gao Yan also wondered, but glanced at her meaningfully. “Maybe there are people and things that he can’t let go of?”

Her?

Liang Shiyun certainly didn’t believe it.

He was very straightforward when he broke up with her back then. It had been six years since they separated. No matter how he felt, it shouldn’t have taken this long for him to realize it…

But she was still curious about what he was thinking.

Sending a text message would be too deliberate and inappropriate, especially after she rejected him.

She wanted to mention it when she accidentally met him, but after talking to Gao Yan, she never saw Chu Xia again. Whether it was the convenience store, the breakfast restaurant, or the parking lot…

They lived in the same community, but never met again. It was as if he had completely disappeared from her life.

It wasn’t until April, at the wedding of her friend, Cheng Qiao, that Liang Shiyun finally met Chu Xia again.

996 means working a job that starts at 9 AM and ends at 9 PM for 6 days of the week
