Angry

The fresh white fungus Yu Huan bought saved her time from soaking it.

She simply cleaned the fungus, removed the root, and then tore it into small pieces. She placed it in a pot. Then, she added rock sugar and similarly cleaned lily slices.

She added water and brought it to a boil to make the soup.

While the soup was boiling, Yu Huan washed the snow pear.

The open kitchen, next to the living room, faced the front door.

As soon as she turned off the water, she heard the sound of the door opening. She turned around and she saw Gao Yan.

Their eyes met, and both of them were somewhat surprised that the other was there.

“Are you back from your business trip?” Yu Huan asked first.

“Yeah, as soon as I got off the plane, I received a message from Yilin saying that he was sick.” Gao Yan frowned slightly. “Did he also send a message to you?”

“He called me this morning to ask for a day off, and he sounded quite serious. I also remembered that he had said he was living alone, and I didn’t trust him. So, I came over to have a look.” Yu Huan explained.

As soon as she said that, the pot gurgled and the water was boiling.

Yu Huan quickly turned down the fire and began peeling the two washed snow pears with a knife.

While she was busy, Gao Yan went to the bedroom to see Chen Yilin.

When he came out again, the snow pears had already been peeled and cored by Yu Huan. It was cut into small uniform pieces and placed on a plate.

“What are you cooking?” Gao Yan asked.

“White fungus and snow pear soup.” Yu Huan rinsed the cutting board under the water. “I made it for Yilin. He was coughing badly and said he wanted to drink this.”

“So you personally made it for him because he wanted to drink it?” Gao Yan asked.

For some reason, Yu Huan felt that this tone was not quite right.

“Perhaps cooking in someone else’s house is a bit presumptuous, but I couldn’t buy food outside,” Yu Huan had to explain.

“I originally bought him granule medicine, but he wouldn’t drink it.” She thought for a moment and asked, “Does Yilin have any bias against traditional Chinese medicine?”

What bias did he have? He just hated that smell.

In the past, every time Chen YIlin’s mother caught a cold, she always depended on him. Later, his father took care of him, and he still drank traditional Chinese medicine obediently.

“His mother and his grandmother always used it,” Gao Yan said concisely.

The conversation was a bit stifling.

“…” Yu Huan didn’t know how to answer.

It just so happened that the phone started to ring. Yu Huan picked it up as she walked over to the balcony.

The phone call was from Eric regarding the trial of the Rhone Industries case on Friday.

After Yu Huan finished taking the call, she looked back. Gao Yan was standing in the kitchen and he even removed the pot lid.

“Although it’s fresh fungus, it doesn’t cook that fast.” Yu Huan walked over. “Are you busy soon?”

“Not yet,” Gao Yan replied. “What’s the matter?”

“I have to go to the Rhone Industries later.”

Yu Huan took the lid from Gao Yan’s hand and set it aside. She took the snow pears and put them into the pot. When the soup boiled again, she turned down the heat.

“Boiling it for 20 minutes is pretty much enough.” She turned to Gao Yan. “Since you’re here, I’ll go first.”

Before she left, she was afraid that something might go wrong with Gao Yan. Yu Huan specifically emphasized that he didn’t need to do anything else. Just wait 20 minutes, then turn off the fire.

However, when Chen Yilin returned from being sick, the first thing he did when he saw her was to accuse her of not keeping her word.

“Lawyer Yu, what happened to the snow fungus soup?” Chen Yilin asked. “You told me you would cook snow fungus soup for me. I ended up drinking the traditional Chinese medicine, and I still have the taste of it in my mouth now.”

“You. Don’t. Mean. What. You. Say.” It was clear that he was feeling much better, and he was also full of anger to make accusations about her.

“I don’t mean what I say?” Yu Huan felt wronged. “I couldn’t buy already made snow fungus soup. I went to the supermarket to buy fresh fungus to make the soup for you. Before the soup was fully cooked, I had to leave first, but your uncle was there…”

Yu Huan told Chen Yilin about having to leave and she told Gao Yan to watch the fire that day.

“Huh? Then why didn’t I get to drink any soup?” Chen Yilin was puzzled. “Did he deliberately make me drink traditional Chinese medicine?”

“How can he do that?!” Chen Yilin was so angry he immediately took out his phone and dialed Gao Yan.

Yu Huan pretended to look at the computer, but she was using her peripheral vision to pay attention to what Chen Yilin was doing.

She saw him walk out in a huff, and after a while, he walked back gloomily. He stopped at her desk and said,“It’s… it’s all my fault, Lawyer Yu. I forgot to tell you, I’m allergic to lilies, so I couldn’t drink the soup you made…”

“Huh?” So my efforts were wasted?

Yu Huan looked up and lowered her head again. “Oh, it’s okay.”

“It’s my fault, I didn’t tell you earlier.” Chen Yilin was still blaming himself.

He never mentioned the soup, and Yu Huan didn’t ask.

But with Chen Yilin’s guilty expression, the soup was probably thrown out and Gao Yan didn’t like sweet food.

Yu Huan didn’t bother too much about it. The next day, when she met Gao Yan in Leshang’s elevator, he brought it up.

“When you cooked the snow fungus soup, I found lilies in it after you left. Yilin is allergic to them, so I didn’t give him any.”

“Oh,” Yu Huan replied and didn’t speak again.

There were only the two of them in the elevator.

Gao Yan looked at Yu Huan through the reflection on the door.

Sensing his gaze, Yu Huan looked up and said, “You could have at least told me.”

“?”

“You could have told me so I can pack it myself and take it back.”

She was busy with her work during the week, and Yu Huan didn’t cook much.

When she thought of how she had worked so hard to make the soup that day, and how its final destination was the trash can—it was okay if Gao Yan didn’t mention it, but when he mentioned it—she suddenly realized that she wasn’t that nice either.

“It might have been better for you to let Yilin pack it and bring it to me than to waste it,” she said, her tone somewhat blaming him.

“You…” Gao Yan took a while to think of how to respond. “Did you think I threw out the soup?”

“…” What else?

Yu Huan looked up to see Gao Yan.

The elevator just opened. Yu Huan couldn’t see Gao Yan’s expression clearly through the reflection anymore. She only heard him flatly state, “I drank it.”

Chen Yilin: Uncle, didn’t you say the soup was packed up by the driver and taken away? I’m so embarrassed by what I said to Lawyer Yu…

Gao Yan: I said he packed it and took it away, but I didn’t say he drank it.

Chen Yilin: … You’re really embarrassing.
