Making Do With It

“Where is Shiyun…?” Chu Xia looked around.

Before he fell into a coma, he remembered that it was Liang Shiyun who anxiously followed him all the way to the hospital.

“Not here, she’s gone.” Gao Yan poured cold water on him again. “She sent you here, made sure you’re okay, and left.”

Chu Xia flattened his lips, feeling the pain from the coma again.

“Don’t be too disappointed. I heard her answering the phone. Something happened at home,” Gao Yan spoke up again.

“What happened?”

“It seems like Professor Fang was hospitalized…”

Chu Xia’s eyebrows suddenly furrowed again.

Fang Yuan was indeed hospitalized. It was a problem she had before: herniated disc putting pressure on the leg nerves. It was not serious, but she needed to recuperate…

When Liang Shiyun rushed back to the city, her stepfather had already arranged everything. The doctor, Cen Mian, who she was introduced to by her aunt, helped a lot during the whole process.

“It was thanks to Dr. Cen. He took us in despite having a busy schedule. I think he really cares about our family,” Liang Shiyun’s stepfather said when he explained Fang Yuan’s condition.

“Dr. Cen?” Liang Shiyun asked.

She felt that the name was vaguely familiar when she heard it, but she couldn’t remember who it was. After being confused for a while, she remembered that Dr. Cen was Cen Mian who had been on a blind date with her before.

“This time you have to invite him to dinner!” Fang Yuan laid on the bed and said to Liang Shiyun. “Dr. Cen had a good impression of you from the blind date, I think the relationship can develop well.”

“… Okay.” Liang Shiyun finally agreed.

She didn’t have that kind of thought about Cen Mian at all, but since he helped out during his busy schedule, she should invite him to a meal.

On that day, Dr. Cen happened to not be working. Liang Shiyun drove, and they went to a nearby western restaurant together.

This was the second time they ate together.

Between Dr. Cen’s intentional actions and Liang Shiyun’s sincere thanks, they had more to chat about than last time.

After the meal, the atmosphere was good. Dr. Cen invited Liang Shiyun to watch a movie again. The invitation was hard to turn down, so Liang Shiyun had no choice but to accept.

They chose a youth film.

After entering the theater, Liang Shiyun realized that the so-called youth films were just stories about first love in a youthful way. The plots were old-fashioned, and it was the kind where one could pretty much guess the ending after watching the beginning.

Liang Shiyun lost interest all of a sudden. She turned to look at Cen Mian next to her. He was watching quite intently, so she gave up the idea of chatting and continued to stare at the screen.

The theater was dark. Liang Shiyun didn’t sleep well the previous few nights, so she fell asleep during it.

She slept a little deeply this time, and when she woke up, the movie had already finished. There were only a few couples left in the whole theater waiting for the ending credit easter eggs.

“I’m sorry.” Liang Shiyun sat up straight, only to realize that Cen Mian’s coat was still covering her body. She quickly handed it back to him, “Thank you.”

“It seems like the most you say to me is thank you. I think since we’ve gone on a date before, you don’t need to be so polite.”

“…” Liang Shiyun was about to say something when suddenly there was a loud sob from the front.

It was a short-haired girl holding on to the boy next to her tightly. It was like she was trying to hold onto him and not let him go.

The boy lowered his head and apologized with a guilty expression on his face. He still pushed the girl’s hands off.

Liang Shiyun and Cen Mian walked out of the theater, but they could still hear what was happening. They pieced together the reason why the girl was crying. It turned out that the boy remembered his first love after watching the movie, and decided to break up with the girl to find his first love.

“I’m sorry, I don’t want a lifetime of regrets like in the movie.”

When she stepped out of the theater, Liang Shiyun still heard the boy apologizing. The girl was crying even louder, as if the sky had fallen.

The level of drama was comparable to the movie.

“Dr. Cen—” Liang Shiyun slowed down. “Do you still remember your first love?”

She saw that Cen Mian was watching the movie closely and it might be because the movie reminded him of some past events. Liang Shiyun turned her head to look at Cen Mian.

“Yeah.” Cen Mian was honest and nodded. After a while, he saw that Liang Shiyun was still staring at him, he added, “She is married now and has two kids.”

Liang Shiyun: “… Do you mind if I ask why you broke up?”

“I don’t mind.” Cen Mian shook his head. “It was because I was too busy back then and didn’t have time to be with her. We had some fights and so we broke up.”

“You didn’t try to continue the relationship?”

“I tried, but I was too busy at that time. I couldn’t be there the way she wanted.”

Liang Shiyun: “…”

Men really were very realistic.

“What about now?” She considered her words again. “Dr. Cen, you should still be quite busy now, and you know I have to be in charge of my father’s company, I am as busy as you, so if we are both busy—”

Then neither one of us are a good choice for each other.

Cen Mian immediately figured out what Liang Shiyun didn’t say out loud.  He never thought about it, but it’s rare to meet someone who had a discerning eye, and

“I think you are not the clingy type, you are more independent and sensible,” Cen Mian said.

This was another sentence that silenced Liang Shiyun.

How could there be a truly sensible person? If a woman really wanted to like someone, not many were willing to be “sensible”—and she was like that. She acted indifferent, but occasionally had a small temper, wanted to act like a baby, and bother the other person “for no reason”.

“What if I say I’m not that kind of person?” Liang Shiyun smiled and stopped.

Cen Mian met her gaze. He read the rejection revealed in her eyes without any surprise.

“I see,” he said, “I will give an explanation to Professor Fang.”

They parted outside the shopping mall. When Liang Shiyun drove out of the underground garage, she saw the girl who was broken up with in the theater. She was standing on the side of the road, wiping her tears, and calling a friend while crying, complaining about the “scumbag”.

Liang Shiyun suddenly thought of something: Most people you meet after the age of 25 have someone else in their hearts.

It probably happened before they were 25, like the crying girl—she didn’t look to be over 20.

Many people probably did not experience any real love after reaching a certain age, but they still chose someone they knew to get married to.

She once thought about doing the same. If she couldn’t find someone she liked again, she would choose someone who satisfied both Father Liang and Fang Yuan. But later, when she really started going on a blind date, when she tried to get along with a good blind date, she realized that she just couldn’t do it

Maybe she was still too idealistic.

Giving up the work she loved and choosing her current job was already a compromise she made in life. If marriage was like this, then she would want to find a marriage partner with a suitable background, and manage the relationship as a “business”

When she thought of the empty marriage in the future, she resented it and rejected it.
