Empty

Liang Shiyun drove home.

Eating dinner and watching a movie should be rejuvenating, but she felt tired. As soon as she entered the elevator, she realized that there was someone she knew standing in the elevator.

“Hi—” Liang Shiyun greeted Lin Yan.

“Hi—” Lin Yan replied, a little embarrassed.

Liang Shiyun noticed that there was a girl standing next to Lin Yan.

The girl was a little small, and she didn’t look very old. She had a small and delicate blushing face. She was looking up at Lin Yan, as if she was asking him who was talking to him.

Is this his new girlfriend?

Liang Shiyun understood, and quickly moved away from Lin Yan, but she could still hear their conversation.

“Who is she?”

“My neighbor.”

“Do you have a good relationship with your neighbor?”

“Haha, yeah… She found Bobby, and then I adopted him.”

…………

During their conversation with their lowered voices, Liang Shiyun didn’t hear her name—Lin Yan probably was not going to contact her again.

During her birthday, Lin Yan came to her house to help her celebrate it. She asked him to leave early because she was in a bad mood.

Later, Lin Yan came to ask about her again. She had a headache because of Chu Xia, and she was busy with work, so she was not in the mood at all. After that, it was her period, so she rejected him again.

After all of that happened, Lin Yan never came to her again.

“Physical relationships” were like this. You can’t make people wait for you or accommodate your time.

Liang Shiyun returned to the apartment.

In a dark room, night came in through the window. There was a lot of traffic outside, and the room was empty. The apartment was in the higher levels, so the noise outside could not come in at all. There was only silence.

Liang Shiyun turned on the light. She poured herself a glass of water and stared at the traffic outside the window. Then she scrolled through the contact list, and somehow landed on the chat with Chu Xia.

She thought about it and sent him a message.

“Feel better now?”

There was no reply for a long time, and when she threw her phone on the sofa and was about to take a shower, a call came.

“Hello…” Chu Xia’s voice was a little low because he just woke up.

But the moment his voice came through, somehow, the huge room seemed less empty.

“Hello.” Liang Shiyun unknowingly sat up better. “Is your cold better?”

“Yeah, much better.” Chu Xia cleared his throat.

The slightly hoarse voice was somewhat sexy and it was clearly heard by Liang Shiyun.

The evening wind blew in from the window, and the quiet air surrounded the room. At this moment, Liang Shiyun felt relaxed in a way that being home should feel. She slowly said, “That’s good.”

Then, for a while, she didn’t know what to say.

They remained silent.

Suddenly, Chu Xia muttered, “As expected of a scenic spot.”

Liang Shiyun: “Huh?”

“I said that the greenery here is really good, and you can hear insects at night,” Chu Xia said, then he got up and opened the window.

Suddenly there were some friction noises from the call, followed by rustling noises and footsteps.

Liang Shiyun guessed that Chu Xia had turned on the speaker, so she listened carefully for a while.

There were indeed the sounds of insects, the rustling of leaves blown by the wind, the rainwater dripping from the leaves to the soil—and Chu Xia’s shaking breathing.

It was like the sound she heard when her head was on his shoulder during the heavy rain that day.

The phone seemed to be covered with moisture all of a sudden.

The evening wind was flowing through the air with a slight coolness. Liang Shiyun closed her eyes. She let her whole body sink into the soft sofa, and her thoughts flashed through her memories—the strong wind and rain that day, Chu Xia’s warmth, his wet hair, and the water that never stopped rolling from the raincoat into their skin.

Until Chu Xia’s voice brought her back to reality again.

“By the way, how is Professor Fang doing now?” Chu Xia asked. “Is it serious?”

“It’s okay, it’s an old problem, the herniated disc was pressing on her nerves, it’s not a big deal,” Liang Shiyun explained. “The discharge from the hospital should happen in a few days.”

“That’s good,” Chu Xia said. “I should be able to leave the day after tomorrow. I’ll go see Professor Fang then.”

Chu Xia meant what he said. He went to Fang Yuan’s house with a bunch of gifts.

Fang Yuan naturally wanted him to stay for dinner.

It was another table of hearty dishes. Liang Shiyun went with what was happening without saying much. Fang Yuan didn’t talk to Chu Xia much, and it might be because he was just in the hospital. Liang Shiyun’s stepfather was always a quiet person. Only Fang Shiya was a little noisy.

The college entrance exam was approaching, and the classwork was getting heavier and heavier. She was under a lot of pressure and needed an outlet to vent.

Fang Shiya chatted about things that happened in school. Liang Shiyun thought about how they had a guest, so she patted Fang Shiya lightly under the table to signal to her to not be so annoying. Fang Shiya stopped talking, but continued after a while. She turned her head to look at Liang Shiyun and blinked. “Hey, sister, I heard from mom that you went on a date with Dr. Cen that you met last time… hehe, how was it?”
